In this episode, we were joined by Angela Thomas, the founder of Angel Success Consulting. With nearly 30 years as a serial entrepreneur, Angela has built and sold businesses in a wide range of industries, from beauty and real estate to aviation and luxury goods. Her journey began in her grandparents’ bakery in East Germany at the age of five, where she began to “suck up entrepreneurship.” Today, she uses her extensive experience to help founders and service providers in Dubai scale their businesses sustainably and internationally.
One of the first challenges Angela helps founders overcome is the misconception that they need to be the absolute “best” before they can start. She sees many entrepreneurs get stuck in a cycle of endless certifications and training, waiting for the perfect moment to become visible. As she puts it, “We are not starting to be the best, but we are starting to become the best.” Her first piece of advice is to start being visible now, because a fantastic product or service is useless if no one knows about it.
The Dubai Advantage: A Shift in Energy
A significant part of the conversation focused on the massive shift of businesses to the UAE. Angela believes it’s about more than just tax incentives. The primary reason, she says, is the “outstanding” positivity and energy of the region. She contrasted this with a mindset she sees in many parts of the Western world, where media and even government policies can foster a low-energy, dependent mindset among the workforce.
In the UAE, people are drawn to a culture that acknowledges and rewards performance. For ambitious individuals and companies, this provides a fertile ground to place their talent and energy. In a world where many are opting to “chill around,” Dubai is a hub for “performers” who want to achieve their goals. For Angela, the combination of a positive mindset and a strong workforce is a key factor that is attracting businesses from around the globe.
The Rise of AI: A Tool, Not a Threat
Angela has a pragmatic view on the expansion of AI. She believes that 2025 will be the last year we know how to work as “normal beings” as we have before. She compared the rapid and irreversible shift to AI with the industrial shifts of the 1900s, noting that this is happening at an unprecedented speed.
However, she doesn’t see AI as a threat to all jobs. Instead, she believes it will take away the jobs of those who don’t know how to work with it. The key, she says, is to understand that AI is a tool that requires human oversight. People will always be needed to rule, program, and handle AI, as it lacks the authenticity, common sense, and emotional intelligence that are unique to human beings. AI can streamline workflows, handle customer interactions, and enhance a business, but it needs a human to guide it, making it a powerful tool for growth rather than a job-killer.
Family vs. Corporate Businesses: The Human Element
Having worked with both family-run businesses and large corporations, Angela pointed out a few key differences. Family-run businesses, she noted, are often more driven by emotional intelligence and personal connections. They prioritize personal recommendations and can make decisions much faster than a large corporation. The decision-making process is “shallow” not in quality, but in speed, allowing them to be more agile.
In contrast, the corporate world is often more political and relies on a lengthy, multi-layered decision-making process. While expertise is valued, a person with a great idea must navigate multiple levels of hierarchy and process to get a project approved. This can lead to slower progress, a stark contrast to the quick and personal approach of a family-run business.
The Power of Frequency
Finally, Angela shared the most important lesson she’s learned in her career: the power of frequency. She explained that you can have the best strategy and technology, but if your personal energy and mindset are not aligned with what you want to attract, you will only get what you pour out. She shared a personal story about a time when she was chasing payments and her negative energy made her more susceptible to being scammed. Her core advice is simple: watch out for your energy. It is the most important factor for success.
Angela’s vision for the future is to create a family office that invests in projects with three core values: sustainability, human involvement, and emotional intelligence. She wants to help others grow and leave a mark as a mentor who guides entrepreneurs to not just build a business, but a life of purpose.
