The start of production of the BMW XM concludes a remarkable year at the BMW plant in Spartanburg. The year began with the U.S. Department of Commerce confirming that BMW manufacturing has led the U.S. in vehicle exports for his eighth straight year. His 257,876 exports for the Spartanburg factory in 2021 totaled over US$10.1 billion.
In September, he also opened a new state-of-the-art logistics center at BMW Manufaktur. This $100 million project of his included the construction of two privately owned bridges connecting his distribution center and factory campus. The 1,000,000-square-meter logistics center consolidates two warehouses and their materials into one building, making processes faster, leaner and more efficient.
The biggest announcement of the year came on his October 19th when the BMW Group unveiled its electric mobility plans for the US. BMW Group CEO Oliver Zipse has announced his $1.7 billion investment in US operations, including his $1 billion to prepare his Spartanburg plant for electric vehicle production. An additional $700 million will be invested in the construction of a new high-voltage battery assembly facility in Woodruff, South Carolina. By 2030, the BMW Group plans to manufacture at least six of his fully electric models in the US.
