With over 20 years of experience, Ian has helped more than 400 organizations find their “superpower” through a proprietary process he calls Blueprinting. This process helps companies define their purpose in seven words or less and uses it to guide everything they do and say.
Ian’s journey began as a copywriter, where he became obsessed with finding the authentic root of a company to get beyond clichés. This led him to a career in strategic planning and, eventually, to his core belief: a company’s single most important strategic asset is knowing the one thing that makes it uniquely remarkable. He stressed that while 98% of companies know their features and benefits, they don’t know this one essential thing.
The beauty of the Blueprinting process is its simplicity. It forces a company to distill its essence into a short, self-evident phrase of seven words or less. This phrase then becomes the strategic driver for everything—from how the company operates to how it communicates with customers. As Ian puts it, it’s the key to getting everyone on the team to “pull in the same direction.”
Defining Purpose: From Picasso to Sinek
Ian revealed a powerful quote from artist Pablo Picasso that became a turning point in his career: “The meaning of life is to find your gift. Your purpose is to share it with the world.” This quote gave him a simple, practical definition of purpose. He realized that the “one thing that makes you uniquely remarkable” is an organization’s gift. In essence, he adapted Picasso’s philosophy to business: Find the best version of your company and be that.
He also drew a clear connection to Simon Sinek’s “Start With Why” philosophy, noting that the answer to “why you exist” is the same as the one thing that makes you uniquely remarkable. Ian has since adapted his corporate Blueprinting process to help individuals, building a course at PurposeU.AI that guides people to discover their own purpose and use it to live a better life.
The Role of AI in Finding Your Purpose
When asked about the role of AI, Ian explained how his platform, PurposeU.AI, uses an AI agent named Wordsmith to help individuals find their purpose. Wordsmith acts as a co-pilot, helping users find the right words to articulate their purpose. More importantly, it helps them see the connections and patterns in their life that they might have missed.
The process involves users identifying their beliefs, wants, and talents. This unique combination of information forms the core components of their purpose. Wordsmith then helps them see what ties it all together, revealing their unique superpower. This makes AI not just a tool for automation but a partner in self-discovery, helping to make the abstract concept of purpose tangible and actionable.
A Lesson in Perspective
To conclude the conversation, Ian shared a powerful piece of advice he received that changed his life: “Why do you let that bother you? You have a choice.” This simple statement taught him that he has the power to choose his reaction to external events. By not letting something bother him, he is saying, “it’s his problem, not mine.”
This is a profound lesson that applies to all aspects of life. In business, it’s easy to get derailed by competitors, difficult clients, or market volatility. However, by focusing on your purpose—your beliefs, wants, and talents—you can make choices that are aligned with your core essence.
