In this episode, we were joined by Walter Sabrin, the Chief Talent Officer at Vensure Employer Solutions. Walter’s journey is a testament to the power of a unique mindset. He transitioned from a hopeful professional tennis player to a corporate leader, and he now uses the lessons he learned on the court to navigate the complex world of talent acquisition.
In just seven years, Walter helped his company, Vensure, grow from 100 people to over 40,000 employees globally, operating in nearly 30 countries. He described this rapid expansion as a “fantastic journey” that shifted his thinking from a U.S.-centric view to a truly global perspective. Vensure provides HR outsourcing solutions, allowing business owners to focus on their core operations while Vensure handles all things related to human resources, including talent acquisition.
The Post-COVID Hiring Shift
Walter shared that the post-COVID landscape has seen a major shift in priorities. Many people don’t want to return to their old careers, particularly in industries like hospitality. This has created a challenge for companies but also opened up a new world of opportunity. As a solution, Walter’s team helps clients tap into new talent pools in different countries. He mentioned that companies are now realizing the “corny expression” that it’s a global world is now a reality. His work has helped him realize that his previous thinking, that everything important happened in the United States, was “so limited.”
He shared insights on which regions and industries are seeing a high demand for talent. Healthcare and the legal community are in tremendous need of support, as are the tech, financial services, and hospitality sectors. His team works like a diagnostic service, identifying where a client is in “pain” and then presenting them with opportunities, which often leads to finding excellent talent in different parts of the world.
AI and the Future of Human Capital
When discussing the impact of AI, Walter offered a refreshingly balanced perspective. He believes that while AI is a fantastic tool for automation and improving efficiency, human capital is more important today than ever. He disagreed with the common fear that AI will take everyone’s job, noting that instead, it is creating new opportunities for those who are willing to learn. His advice to anyone worried about AI is simple: “Start studying AI. Become a subject matter expert.” He noted that clients are actively looking for AI experts who can help them implement and manage these new technologies to improve their processes.
Leadership from the Tennis Court
Walter applies many of the principles he learned as an athlete to his leadership style. He believes that different people require different types of leadership, so he takes a micro-approach, working with his team members individually. His primary goal as a leader is to clear the path for his team to succeed. He also noted the importance of teamwork and collaboration, highlighting that his department works closely with others like sales and HR, a dynamic that can be challenging but is crucial for success.
He drew a powerful parallel between the mental side of sports and corporate life, describing them as “almost identical.” Just as a tennis player must have a short-term memory to move on from a bad point, a business leader must forget a bad day or a failed project and focus on affecting positive change tomorrow. He referenced Roger Federer’s career, noting that despite losing 46% of the points he played, his success came from having impeccable timing and a steady, level-headed mindset.
A Vision for the Global Economy
Looking ahead, Walter’s vision for the next five years is to spread the word that businesses cannot fight the reality of a global economy. He believes that embracing the global marketplace is the key to creating more opportunities and making businesses more successful. He also encouraged everyone, regardless of age, to embrace new technology rather than resisting it. By learning new skills and becoming a subject matter expert, individuals can make themselves more valuable and their businesses more efficient.
The Greatest Lesson: Accountability
To conclude the conversation, Walter shared the most important piece of advice he ever received. After losing a tennis match and breaking his racket in a moment of frustration, his parents held him accountable. They didn’t yell or punish him; they made him save up his own money to buy new rackets, teaching him that you are accountable for your actions. He applies this principle to his professional life as well: if your numbers are good, you deserve the credit; if they’re not, it’s your responsibility to find a way to improve. This lesson on self-responsibility and accountability is one he has passed on to his children and a principle he lives by every day.
