Chips, Geopolitics, and Purpose – A Global Engineer’s Vision for India’s Future with Prachurya Bharadwaj

In this truly unique episode, we were joined by Prachurya Bharadwaj, a multidisciplinary engineering expert whose career spans four countries and the full spectrum of capital equipment development. Prachurya’s journey has taken him from early R&D to full-scale manufacturing, with specialized experience in semiconductors, energy, medical, and automotive sectors.

Prachurya’s international background has given him a broad perspective on technology and business. His insights into the high-tech equipment industry, particularly semiconductors, are not just theoretical but grounded in hands-on experience, including working on what he calls “the world’s most complicated machine,” the EXE 5000. Our conversation with him was a masterclass in connecting the dots between technological innovation, geopolitical strategy, and societal development.

The Semiconductor Jungle: A World of Its Own

Prachurya described the semiconductor industry as a “jungle” and a “world of its own.” While the public sees a company like NVIDIA thriving, he reminded us that this success is a result of extreme long-term planning, strategic partnerships, and relentless hard work. In this high-stakes industry, companies are always planning for the next 20-30 years, with multiple contingency plans. This forward-looking approach, combined with strategic government support, is the real driver behind their success.

He also shared a powerful anecdote about his time at ASML in the Netherlands, a heart of the semiconductor equipment industry, where they would be given roadmaps for decades into the future. This level of foresight and planning, he argues, is what makes the industry so resilient and exhilarating for young engineers.

Geopolitics, Chip Shortages, and Hard Power

The conversation delved into the geopolitical factors that have a direct impact on the semiconductor industry. Prachurya pointed to the U.S. trade sanctions against China in 2020-2021 as a major cause of the global chip shortage. These political decisions created a period of uncertainty, forcing companies like TSMC and Samsung to pivot and find innovative ways to adapt. He praised the ingenuity of engineers who worked together to find solutions, proving that while politics can create problems, human innovation will always find a way to overcome them.

This led to a powerful discussion about India’s role in the global arena. Prachurya expressed his excitement about India’s foray into semiconductor manufacturing, but also a pragmatic observation that the current focus is on assembly rather than core lithography and fabrication. He emphasized that for India to truly become a leader and an equal partner in the global ecosystem, it must shift its focus from soft power to hard power—specifically, the development of capital equipment.

Capital Equipment: The Engine of Industrial and Agricultural Growth

Prachurya passionately argued that India needs to invest heavily in capital equipment—machines that produce assets and generate money, rather than depreciate. He made a compelling case for a grassroots approach, starting with industries that form the backbone of India’s economy: agriculture and veterinary sciences.

He highlighted how a small country like the Netherlands has become a global leader in agricultural produce through advanced machinery and automation. By applying similar principles, India could maximize the productivity of its vast agricultural land, empowering farmers and preventing the “brain drain” of young people leaving their villages for jobs in the city. The same logic applies to veterinary care, where developing simple medical equipment could make a huge impact on a massive population of stray animals.

He concluded this point with a call for greater collaboration among Asian powers, suggesting that if India, China, Japan, and South Korea could set aside their differences and join forces, their combined resources in technology, manpower, and natural resources would create an unstoppable force on the global stage.

The Future of Chips: From AI to Agriculture

I asked Prachurya about the future role of semiconductors, especially in light of the AI revolution. He was unequivocal: chips are the new oil. From AI data centers and smart homes to electric vehicles and future hydrogen power systems, semiconductors are an integral and growing part of every aspect of modern life. He stressed that India’s investment in chip manufacturing is a critical first step towards securing its technological sovereignty, but it must ensure the manufactured products remain within the country to build leverage and self-reliance.

He also offered a heartfelt word of encouragement to young people who are leaving corporate jobs to return to their ancestral land and innovate in agriculture, calling it the “right thing that everybody else should be doing” and a cornerstone of Indian culture.

The Guiding Principle: Surrender to a Higher Power

When asked about the principles that drive him, Prachurya revealed a deeply philosophical and spiritual foundation. He spoke about his belief in a “higher power” from a young age and how surrendering his anxieties and challenges to this power has given him immense strength. He mentioned his recent journey of reading the Vedas, Puranas, and Upanishads, which have further reinforced his sense of purpose and resilience. It was a humbling and insightful end to a conversation that beautifully bridged the worlds of engineering and spirituality.
